La Vallette Apartments are located on the famous Strait Street. At the time of the Knights of Saint John, the street was notorious for sword duels. In the 19th and up to the mid-20th centuries, when Malta was the main base of the British fleet in the Mediterranean, the street was packed with bars and restaurants catering mainly for English sailors who would come to Strait Street seeking entertainment during their shore leave. The street is narrow and runs through the entire length of the city of Valletta, the sea being at one end and the city walls at the other – for this reason British sailors used to refer to it as ‘the Gut’. Today, the streets, although much less rowdy than in the past, is still full of life with numerous bars and restaurants.

La Valette Apartments are located within walking distance from all the main sites of Valletta including Fort St Elmo which played a vital role both in the Great Siege of 1565 and also during the Second World War, the magnificent St John Co-Cathedral where you can admire works by Caravaggio and Mattia Preti and the Grand Master’s Palace with its impressive armoury.   Valletta also includes a number of cultural venues such as Manoel Theatre (https://www.teatrumanoel.com.mt) the country's national theatre and the home of Malta Philharmonic Orchestra and Pjazza Teatru Rjal (https://culture.gov.mt/en/pjazzateatrurjal/Pages/main.aspx ) on the site of the old Malta Opera House which was destroyed during the Second World War.

Valletta bus terminus (10 minutes’ walk from our property) is the main bus terminus of the island and from here you can take a bus to any part of the island. From Valletta you can also take a sea ferry to either the historical cities of Vittoriosa and Senglea or to Sliema; the main shopping district of the island.
